The thought paper, sponsored by SAGE Publishing, contains three common components of effective research and a five-part plan that business schools can use to produce research that has positive societal impact.

The thought paper contains:

  • An examination of the increasing importance of social impact as a research priority for companies and management and the role of the AACSB in steering social impact in research.
  • The three common components of research that have social impact: Research that is interdisciplinary, at the interface of science and practice, and that brings about real changes that are useful for stakeholders.
  • With a five-step roadmap, business schools can develop and refine plans that promote research with a positive societal impact.

“We are proud to have worked with AACSB on this thought paper, which reflects SAGE Business & Management’s own mission-oriented approach to developing a wide range of resources that empower students and researchers to make positive changes in society,” says Kristi Ward, Senior Director for SAGE Library Editorial. “Our team strives to respond to the evolving needs of the business school and to work with academics from all disciplines to facilitate how research and its results can lead to real innovation.”

The AACSB 2020 business accreditation standards require business schools to demonstrate their positive impact on society. This thought paper continues the role of the AACSB in getting business schools to put societal impact at the center of their missions and activities.

“AACSB is excited to partner with SAGE Publishing in creating such an insightful and thought-provoking paper,” said Caryn Beck-Dudley, President and CEO of AACSB International. “Creating such thought leadership shows how business education continues to lead by example and illustrates the many ways businesses can have a positive impact on society.”
